A pheromone trap is a special tool used to catch pest insects like moths or beetles using smell.
A pheromone is a natural chemical signal that insects use to communicate with one another. In many species, female insects release a pheromone to attract males for mating. Scientists have identified and recreated these natural scents, allowing growers to use them in pest monitoring.
How it Works
The Smell: Female insects release a natural scent (called a pheromone) to attract male insects. The trap contains a tiny artificial lure that mimics this exact scent.
The Attraction: Male insects smell the lure from far away and fly into the trap, thinking they will find a mate.
The Trap: Once inside, the insects get stuck on sticky paper or fall into a container they cannot escape.
Why People Use Them
Safe for Plants: They do not use harmful chemical sprays.
Early Warning: Farmers and gardeners use them to check if a specific pest has arrived before damage occurs.
Population Control: Catching the males prevents them from mating, which reduces the number of new pest insects.
Separating fact from fiction
Many growers are interested in using pheromone traps to monitor and manage insect pests, but one question is often asked:
"Won't the trap attract more pests into my field?"
The simple answer is no. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about pheromone lures. Rather than bringing new pests from far away into your crop, pheromone traps are designed to detect and capture insects that are already present in or very close to your field.

Once inside the trap, the insects cannot escape, allowing growers to monitor pest activity and decide whether control measures are needed. Because each pheromone is highly specific, a lure for one pest species will usually attract only that species, making pheromone traps an accurate and environmentally friendly monitoring tool.
Will the trap bring more pests into my crop?
No. The scent released by a pheromone lure is effective only over a relatively short distance. It is not strong enough to draw insects from neighbouring farms or distant fields. Instead, the trap captures insects that are already living in the crop or flying naturally through the immediate area. Think of it as a detector rather than a magnet. The trap simply reveals that the pest is already present, often before crop damage becomes visible. In many cases, growers are surprised to discover that pests have been active for several days or even weeks before they notice any signs of damage.
Practical example: Cucumber fruit fly
The cucumber fruit fly is a serious pest of cucurbits such as cucumbers, pumpkins, squash and melons. Adult flies lay their eggs inside young fruit, and the developing larvae feed within the fruit, causing rotting, deformities and significant yield losses.
A pheromone trap for cucumber fruit fly attracts the male flies already present in or near the crop. By checking the trap regularly, growers can detect the first appearance of the pest and take action before populations increase and fruit damage becomes widespread. Without a trap, farmers often only realise they have a fruit fly problem after they begin finding damaged fruit. By then, many eggs have already been laid, making control more difficult.
Why monitoring matters
Pheromone traps are one of the most valuable tools in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme because they help growers:
Detect pests early, before serious crop damage occurs.
Monitor changes in pest numbers throughout the season.
