Practical ways to reduce chemical use on your farm

Across Zambia, more growers are looking for sustainable ways to produce healthy crops while reducing their reliance on chemical pesticides. Whether you manage a small vegetable garden, a family farm or a larger commercial operation, farming with nature can improve crop health, encourage beneficial insects and build a more resilient farming system.
Reducing chemical use does not happen overnight. It is a gradual process of creating healthy plants, healthy soils, and a balanced ecosystem in which natural enemies help keep pests under control. Here are some practical ways to get started.
Start with healthy plants
Healthy plants are naturally better equipped to withstand pest and disease pressure. Crops that receive balanced nutrition, sufficient water and good soil conditions are less likely to suffer severe damage from insects or pathogens.
One way to support healthy plant growth is with the use of bio-stimulants. Unlike fertilisers, bio-stimulants do not directly supply nutrients. Instead, they stimulate natural plant processes, helping crops develop stronger root systems, improve nutrient uptake and better tolerate environmental stresses such as drought and heat. Stronger plants are often less attractive to pests and recover more quickly after pest damage.
Feed the soil
Healthy crops begin with healthy soil. Adding compost, organic matter, and crop residues improves soil structure and encourages beneficial microorganisms that recycle nutrients and support root development. Avoiding excessive soil disturbance also helps protect earthworms and other beneficial soil organisms. A living soil creates the foundation for a productive and sustainable farm.
Invite nature's pest controllers
Not all insects are harmful. In fact, many insects work for the farmer by feeding on crop pests. Ladybird beetles consume large numbers of aphids, lacewing larvae feed on whiteflies and thrips, while hoverfly larvae also prey on aphids. Tiny parasitic wasps help control caterpillars and other damaging insects before they become a problem.

These beneficial insects can only thrive if they have food, shelter, and protection. Reducing unnecessary insecticide applications allows these natural enemies to establish themselves and provide ongoing pest control throughout the growing season.
Grow flowers that help your crops
One of the easiest ways to attract beneficial insects is by planting flowering plants around fields or between crop rows. Flowering plants provide nectar and pollen that many beneficial insects need as an energy source, especially adult parasitoid wasps, hoverflies, and lacewings. By supporting these natural enemies, growers encourage them to remain in the field where they continue searching for crop pests.

Including flowering plants around vegetable fields to support natural enemies throughout the season.
Greater plant diversity often creates a healthier and more balanced farming ecosystem.

Scout before you spray
Regular crop scouting is one of the most valuable habits any grower can develop. Inspect crops at least once a week, checking both the upper and lower surfaces of leaves for pests, eggs, and beneficial insects. Early detection allows problems to be managed before they become severe and helps prevent unnecessary pesticide applications.
Think long-term
Reducing chemical use is about building a farming system that becomes stronger each season. Healthy soils, vigorous plants, beneficial insects, and flowering habitats all work together to create a more resilient crop.
Chemical pesticides may still have a place when pest pressure becomes severe, but they are most effective when used carefully as part of an Integrated Pest Management programme rather than as the first solution. And by combining biostimulants, healthy soil management, companion planting and habitat plants such as Koppert's Lobularia, Zambian growers can harness nature's own pest control systems. The result is healthier crops, lower reliance on chemicals, improved biodiversity and a more sustainable future for both the farm and the next generation.
