Growing Zambia's Organic Movement

uBumi PGS is a community-driven organic certification network based in Zambia.

Founded in 2022 by a group of farmers, producers, and consumers in Lusaka, uBumi, meaning "health" in many Zambian dialects, is built on the principles of Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS): a people-centred approach to organic certification where farmers, consumers, and community members verify and vouch for each other's practices together.

Unlike costly conventional third-party certification, PGS places trust and accountability in the hands of the community, making organic certification more accessible, transparent, and meaningful for everyone involved.

uBumi operates in alignment with IFOAM Organics International standards, ensuring its certification is both locally grounded and internationally credible.

Whether you're an experienced organic grower, a conventional farmer looking to transition, or someone just starting out, uBumi is here to walk alongside you. We offer hands-on guidance for farmers making the shift to organic, as well as practical advice for those growing organically for the very first time.

Our members come together for annual farm inspections, shared training sessions, and monthly Green Gatherings at Greens & Grains, where farmers and consumers swap knowledge, champion native and traditional crops, and celebrate Zambia's rich food culture.

We also actively advocate for seed sovereignty, supporting farmers' rights to save, share, and grow their own seeds.
