In recent years, Zambia has seen a resurgence in the organic movement, as more and more farmers and consumers turn away from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and embrace organic and conservation farming practices.
This shift is driven in part by concerns over the potential health and environmental impacts of GMOs, as well as a growing appreciation for the benefits of organic food and seed.
Organic farming involves the use of natural methods to grow crops and raise animals, without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms. In addition to being healthier for consumers, organic farming has a number of benefits for the environment, including improved soil health, reduced water pollution, and increased biodiversity.
One of the key organizations promoting conservation farming and organic farming in Zambia is Kasisi Agricultural College, a Catholic institution that trains farmers in sustainable farming techniques and agroecology. The college offers courses and workshops on topics such as seed saving, organic pest management, and soil conservation, and also conducts research on conservation agriculture and sustainable food systems.
Other organizations working to promote conservation farming and organic farming in Zambia include Foundations Zambia, which works with small-scale farmers to improve food security and promote sustainable agriculture. Through their scientific studies at their research centre in Mkushi they have proved that organic farming can be just as effective as using chemical inputs, even on a large scale. They have developed a simple methodology that can be used by household and farmers in rural and urban areas.
Green Fox Organics, which focuses on the production and distribution of organic vegetables and other crops; and the Agroecology Alliance, which brings together farmers, researchers, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable farming practices and protect traditional seed varieties.
As the organic movement continues to gain momentum in Zambia, there is hope that these and other organizations will be able to help farmers transition to more sustainable and healthy farming practices, while also protecting the environment and ensuring food security for future generations. By promoting the use of organic seed and the adoption of conservation farming practices, these organizations are helping to build a more resilient and sustainable food system in Zambia and beyond.
